Simultaneous interpretation involves the twin tasks of translating while listening and listening while translating. Seated in special booths, interpreters listen to a speaker’s words through headphones and translate them simultaneously while speaking into a microphone. Listeners can hear the interpretation through earphones. Simultaneous interpretation requires special audio and interpretation equipment and materials.
In addition, since simultaneous interpretation requires such intense concentration, interpreters need to rotate in 10- to 15-minute shifts. For this reason, a team of two to four interpreters will be provided depending on the content and length of the event.
In successive interpretation, the interpreter takes notes while listening to the speaker’s words and then interprets them during pauses.
Successive interpretation takes twice as long as simultaneous interpretation because the interpreter interprets individual statements one after another. This method of interpretation is employed for meetings in which accuracy is especially important as well as for business negotiations, presentations, and seminars. Normally it does not require any special equipment or materials.
Depending on the content, successive interpretation is usually conducted by one interpreter for up to three hours or by two interpreters for longer than three hours.
This kind of interpretation, in which the interpreter whispers his or her interpretation into the ear of the listener, is used when only one or two people require interpretation.
As a form of simultaneous interpretation that does not require the use of headphones or microphones, it is important that whispering interpretation takes place in an environment where the interpreter can easily hear what both parties are saying.
As with simultaneous interpretation, multiple interpreters are needed for extended whispering interpretation sessions.
