For a Sustainable Planet
Introduced below are some of DHC’s practical sustainability initiatives, including measures taken during product shipment and eco-friendly warehouse automation.
DHC has replaced conventional plastic packaging materials used to protect products shipped in cardboard boxes to mail-order customers with FSC-certified* paper materials.
This has resulted in an equivalent annual reduction of 16.96 t in CO2 emissions. It has also helped make work more efficient by securing package contents and enabling easy adjustments to fit product shapes.
DHC has replaced the boxes used to deliver products to mail-order customers with new, FSC-certified* boxes. In addition to reducing the number of box types from 14 to 8, we’ve adopted a simplified box design that eliminates the previous blue and white stripes.
This has contributed to an annual reduction of 79.32 t in CO2 emissions. It has also helped make work more efficient, as the new design enables easy, one-touch assembly and disassembly.
DHC directly manages 95 DHC Stores*1 across Japan. In August 2024, we stopped delivering products in cardboard boxes and now use returnable Eco Biz Boxes.
A returnable box can be reused 200 times, reducing annual CO2 emissions by 33.68 t while eliminating the labor related to waste disposal. Reuse of the 2,000 newly adopted returnable boxes is projected to reduce total emissions by 160 t*2 over about five years*3.
DHC’s logistics center (Kawasaki Center) has adopted the AutoStore robotic warehouse automation system. Full-fledged operation of AutoStore began in August 2023.
The AutoStore design employs a robot that crisscrosses above a horizontal and vertical grid of aluminum rails containing special cargo containers, thereby removing individual containers as needed. This enables high-density, space-saving storage of over 410,000 items in 11,000 product types in DHC’s mail-order inventory. In this way, AutoStore reduces the floor area needed for product storage to about one-fifth the previous space, while also raising efficiency since operators can complete product picking and restocking without having to walk around the warehouse. This makes it possible to realize a more comfortable working environment. In addition, each highly efficient battery-powered robot only consumes about 100 watts per hour.
